About us

Every day, millions of patients in the UK take medicines to manage the long-term conditions they are living with. Supporting these patients so that they understand and get the best from their medicines and deal with the ups and downs of their conditions, is one of the biggest challenges facing the NHS as the population ages.

That’s why, in 2011, the Community Pharmacy Future project was created through a collaboration of Boots UK, LloydsPharmacy, Rowlands Pharmacy and Well (formerly The Co-operative Pharmacy).

Community pharmacies provide a safe, efficient and effective service dispensing over one billion prescription items each year in the UK, backed by a network of pharmaceutical wholesalers offering twice daily deliveries to pharmacies across the country. However, community pharmacy must further establish its role as a clinical profession, supporting patients and assisting other healthcare professionals in optimising the use and prescribing of medicines and relieving pressure on urgent and emergency care services.

The Community Pharmacy Future project aims to design pathways for pharmacy services that will give patients and carers the practical support they need for getting the best outcomes from medicines that have been prescribed for long-term conditions. All our services have been designed to deliver robust evidence of the health economic and patient outcomes benefits from services delivered through community pharmacies.

Our work is jointly funded by the four pharmacy companies. Our aim is to support innovation and better patient care through services that can be provided by all community pharmacies for the benefit of patients. Our service development draws on the expertise of our in-house teams working together with external academics and a Steering Group that includes representatives from NHS England, leading pharmacists and academics. Patients participating in our service evaluations receive this additional care free-of-charge, alongside any other NHS services they may be eligible for.
