Community Pharmacy Future project team scoops 'Respiratory Team of the Year' at The BMJ Awards 2014

Tuesday, 27 May 2014
The Community Pharmacy Future (CPF) project team is delighted to announce that it has won Respiratory Team of the Year at the prestigious BMJ Awards 2014. The BMJ Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in healthcare across the UK with categories including ground-breaking research, inspirational clinical leaders and innovations to improve patient care.

The only pharmacy-led team to be shortlisted for any category in the Awards; the CPF team beat off competition from four other respiratory medicine teams across England, all of whom are making a real difference to patients’ lives - making this a particularly noteworthy achievement. The team scooped the award for the collaborative project which aimed to demonstrate the bigger role that pharmacy can play in the delivery of care, in particular, supporting patients with COPD. Results from the research highlighted an NHS cost saving of over £470 million per annum.
Tricia Kennerley, Healthcare Public Affairs Director, Alliance Boots, and a member of the CPF Project Management Committee, collected the award on behalf of the CPF Project Team which was presented by Dr Eric Lim, Associate Editor of Thorax, the BMJ Group’s respiratory medicine journal. The Awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Westminster Park Plaza Hotel in London with the CPF Project Team accompanied by guests from pharmacy bodies and NHS England who supported the project.
Ahead of the awards, the CPF project team made a short presentation to a panel of judges at BMJ House, which included Dr Robert Winter, Vice-President of the British Lung Foundation and Professor Wisia Wedzicha, Centre for Respiratory Medicine. The presentation was made by Dr Tracey Thornley, Boots UK, Clare Kerr, LloydsPharmacy and a member of the CPF Project Management Committee, and Jonathan Buisson from Alliance Boots.
Tricia Kennerley, Healthcare Public Affairs Director, Alliance Boots commented: “This award is real recognition by the medical profession of the work that community pharmacists can do to improve the lives of patients with long-term conditions. It is gratifying to be chosen from among such other worthy finalists, all of whom are also doing great work. We are very pleased that the judges emphasised how our work was patient-led and that it demonstrates integrated care in action.”
